2016 Honorees

Brenda Wraalstad

Brenda WraalstadI have suffered with migraines and visual auras my entire adult life. In the summer of 2011, I was experiencing them more frequently even though I was using daily preventative medication to keep them under control.

In July 2011, I had what doctors have determined to be a sensory aura where I experienced temporary paralysis on the left side of my face and my left arm. After the ER doctors could not find anything wrong with me, my Fargo neurologist, at my request, ordered an MRI of my brain. I was given the devastating news that I had a brain tumor which, incidentally had nothing to do with the migraine symptoms I was experiencing.

After careful consideration, my husband and I decided that the Mayo Clinic would be able to provide the highest quality treatment, recovery options, and was the best fit for me. With the aid of intra-operative MRI scanning, I had a successful tumor resection on September 30th, 2011. Miraculously, I have no noticeable effects from the tumor or surgery.
