"In Memoriam"

Ryan Mayer May 26,1969 - April 1, 2010

Ryan MayerAfter several months of headaches increasing in intensity, and my memory and thinking ability becoming weakened, I finally found myself at the walk-in clinic on South University Drive in Fargo. The doctor on duty was sharp enough to order a CT scan of my brain. What they found surprised them to the point where I needed to go to the downtown Meritcare location immediately for an MRI. The next day, May 15, 2007, I had major brain surgery to remove a goose egg shaped tumor that was pushing the left side of my frontal lobe over to the right. Several weeks later, we were told it was a Grade 3 Oligoastrocytoma.

The following summer was a challenge to recover from the surgery. However, I was able to drive to all my follow-up doctor appointments and for the radiation treatments. My goal was to be healthy enough to help out with the sugar beet harvest at least one more year. I accomplished that goal, and am now going on my 3rd sugar beet harvest post surgery. Further, I also enjoy snowmobiling with my two boys, Matthew (5) and Andrew (2). My wife Lori and my 7 month old daughter Maria give me strength and comfort as I now lead a fairly normal life. It would be normal except for the quarterly MRI checkups and doctor visits.

I work as a senior credit analyst for CoBank, where I have worked for the past 17 years.
